On the way to work today, I was behind this bus which was advertising for Taiwan. I didn't take a picture of the bus advert and I can't seem to find the picture online, but there were 2 halves. The left half had a man sitting in what would seem to be a spa of sorts. And the right half had a woman sitting in also a spa of sorts. However here's the odd thing. The woman in the ad was this young chinese supermodel looking type person. But the man? He was some sleazy looking middle aged man. And it sort of seemed like he was leering at the lady.

Taiwan: Land of Sleaze. Come lear at the women. Oddly enough, I think that'd actually get quite a lot of tourists.

I agree with the blog writer on this. In fact I was thinking something along those lines when I read his letter in the papers a few days ago. I'm surprised that the ICA actually entertained his request and even more surprised that the press actually published this stupid letter. Why give attention to such cases? Did no one else write anything insightful? He believes that the name chosen for his daughter would ensure her a a good future but that somehow got countered by her birth cert? For the sake of future Singaporeans Joseph, don't reproduce anymore. Stop at one.

Just caught Wall-E. On the surface it's a straightforward love story. Boy (robot) meets Girl (robot). Girl (robot) almost accidently incinerates Boy (robot). Boy (robot) falls in love with Girl (robot). Girl (robot) has a photon/plasma cannon and is extremely violent. Well almost typical love story. But beneath the sweet love story (the montage scene and the space "dancing" scene in particular), there are other layers to the movie. There's a less than subtle critique of how we are polluting the earth and one day we may make the planet inhospitable. There's also a message of how we may have become too dependent on machines to do everything and what might be the end result. Basically, a mega couch potato.

But at the end of the day, it's still mainly a touching love story.

It was a surprisingly slow week at work today. Lots of stuff to do but nothing could be done because of.. well .. technical difficulties.

Anyway stuff that I did to pass the time:

1) Eat mooncakes and surf the net. The office has a few boxes of mooncakes given to us by our "customers" of sorts. Some were good like the ones from Goodwood Park hotel. Another one which I just tried today has a very unusual taste. Reminds me of orange peels mixed with curry.

2) Play stupid handphone number games. Emerald was telling me how she wanted to get a new handphone number which spelt out her name. Which led me to see what my phone number spelt out. I missed Zombitoe by 1 number... would have been cool.

So in the news today, a malaysian blogger got arrested under the ISA (Internal Security Act). He's being charged with posting articles which might incite hatred. And somehow, one of their mid level party members was able to make remarks comparing the Chinese in Malaysia as Jews in America and calling them immigrants and get away with nothing more than a slap on the wrist. Given that what the blogger said probably reached a smaller portion of the population than what the party member said as it was covered by the press, I'm thinking that the Malaysian authorities need to seriously check their priorities..

Last week my friend told me that a university professor of mine passed away. He was knocked down by a truck while he was walking home from NUS to his home in Buona Vista. He leaves behind his wife and son. He was 41 years old.

Today, Vincent told me that a former colleague of ours also passed away. She was on training in America where she met with a car accident. The driver lost control of the car. She was 24 years old. She was not wearing a seatbelt.
