Neighbourly Jack-ass-like behaviour...
Just submitted my thesis and tech paper to my examiner! Yay! Anyway onto my neighbours. My immediate neighbours are nice people (on both sides). My definition of nice is very simple. They don't have annoying/inconsiderate/selfish behaviour. They're not noisy etc etc.
My not so immediate neighbours however are real pains in the butt. They are the kind of people who are inconsiderate. (My relationship with them is similar to Martin's with his neighbour.. hahaha..) Let me describe one of my peeves with them. All the houses in my estate have no more grass. All converted to tile. So these 2 houses, well when they want to make a 3 point, well they won't do it in their own lot. In fact they put flower pots and stuff at the entrance to prevent people from doing likewise (I'm sure you can visualise this). Probably for fear of damaging their porch tiles. But oh .. their neighbours' porch seems to be open for them to damage. What utter disregard and selfish behaviour on their part.
Yes... these are the jackasses of my estate. (And one even held an early morning Hillsongs concert in their home.. before 9am)

The Amazing Chocolate Hippo Challenge!!
Cheryl has a sort of challenge on her blog asking people to write about chocolate hippos. I dun know what they are so I just wrote a story explaining it. :) Enjoy.

Once upon a time, there was a magical kingdom located in the middle of the earth; there lived a fair and just king and his queen. They ruled the kingdom together with wisdom. They had a daughter whom they loved more than anything in the world. She had lovely features and grew up to be the most beautiful woman in the kingdom. All was well with the kingdom. However, outside the kingdom was a harsh land. Wild beasts roamed the plains. The heat of day was lethal. Humans could not cross the land in the day without dying from the intense heat. The nights were cold as well. Nightfall brought with it harsh winter. Traveling in the night was foolish as well as hypothermia would set on any poor unfortunate soul who would venture out of the kingdom. These weather conditions served as a natural barrier for the kingdom, to protect them from potential enemies on the outside.
For all its peace and prosperity, the kingdom had one flaw. The people were complacent. They believed that they were safe from all invaders. They were wrong. If they had paid enough attention, they would have realized that the outside world was harsh for humans, however there were creatures that thrived outside. Creatures that were able to adapt to both the intense heat and harsh cold. But these were not the problem. For far beyond the kingdom, lay another kingdom. This kingdom was the opposite of the magical kingdom. Whereas the magical kingdom gleamed even in the night, this dark kingdom was dark even in the day. Screams would be heard coming from the mines below the city.
In the heart of this dark kingdom beat an even darker heart. The heart belonged to the Lizard King. The Lizard King was a powerful wizard as well. He also possessed the Eye of Eidos. With this gem, he could see all. He used it to spy on people in his kingdom, which was how he was able to seize the kingdom and become king. However he grew bored with being king. He grew bored and restless with his domain. So one fateful day, he cast his Eye far beyond the vast desert and saw the princess. He was instantly smitten with her and decided to bring her to his kingdom. He began plotting. He realized that he would not be able to travel in the night because his kind was slow in the night. The cover of darkness would have been advantageous. Still there would be the advantage of surprise because thru the Eye, he knew the people of that kingdom were complacent in their safety. That would be their downfall.
They struck on the princess’ 16th birthday. The entire kingdom was in a mood of celebration, feasting and merriment was the order of the day when the Lizard King and his army fell upon them. The casualties suffered that day were heavy. Men, women and children, none were spared. It was only with the aid of the Magus was the small army able to drive the Lizard King and his army out of the kingdom. But they were able to complete their objective. Capture the princess.
The kingdom fell into a state of mourning. The people mourned for their dead and the loss of their beloved princess. They also mourned because they came to realize that their kingdom was not impregnable. They began to build up their defenses. Yet even with their defenses they mourned. They had lost their princess and there was no way to get her back. What once served as their protection now became their prison. However, the Magus did not give up hope. He had been studying the creatures outside of the kingdom for a while now. They were able to survive outside for some reason. He needed to get one of the specimens. He would go out in the night because it was easier to survive the night. The animals were also more docile at night. He covered himself with animal hides to keep warm and tied a rope around his waist. He had his assistant hold onto the other end with instructions to pull him back in exactly 10 minutes, no more.
The first try was un-successful and he nearly died. He then realized that 10 minutes was too long. He didn’t even realize that his body temp had dropped so drastically. He was unconscious when his assistant pulled him back thru the kingdom doors. Learning from his first try, he covered himself with animal fat to insulate himself from the cold. This time he restricted his time outside to 5 minutes. This too was met with failure. He realized that he needed some bait. He would place the bait out in the day, and hopefully the creatures would still be near the bait when night came. He was lucky the third time. He was able to capture the young of the creature. He brought the young back to the kingdom for study.
After weeks of observation, he realized how this creature was able to survive outside. In the day, the creature secreted a substance around its body. The substance kept its body temperature constant. At night the substance hardened and form an insulator better than animal fat and animal hides combined. The Magus named the creature “hippo” which loosely translated to English meant stout horse because it looked like a stout horse. The substance it secreted he named “chocolate” which loosely translated meant armor or armored. Thus they called the creature a “chocolate hippo”.

Post Script: The story pretty much ends here. I met the objective of the challenge. To write about a chocolate hippo. : )

Joel V.s. Prudential
First up all this is based on my personal experience and therefore personal opinion. So if Prudential is lawyering up.. I'm just saying what happened and giving my opinion on it.
That being said, I no longer trust Prudential after this experience. Firstly I was supposed to meet up one of their managers this afternoon at 3pm. This time was confirmed on Monday evening. Then in the morning I get a call saying if it's possible to push back the meeting to 4pm. I said no as I have stuff to do (stuff being FYP thesis etc etc). So the lady says ok . 3pm. Then somewhere around 12:30pm, lady calls me (not the manager, never spoke with the manager) says if possible to push to 3:30pm. Ok, I decide fine. I reach there at 3:15.. wait around abit and call the lady (Angel). She asks if her manager has called me yet, I say no, then she says just wait at the lift lobby. Fine. (thankfully I foresaw this and brought a comic book to read, it's like Gaiman signing all over again.. except that was more enjoyable.) I wait till about 3:45. Msg Angel again and tell her that I'm still waiting and I have to go soon. At 4, being fed up, I left. In the car park, phone started to ring. Ignored it.
Points to note: Seems to me that they wanted 4pm after all and were stalling for time. I don't feel at all guilty for ignoring the calls seeing how they were dishonest with me from the start. From how they got my info 1) I dun have an ex-classmate called michelle, neither does my friend who also got a call with the same sales pitch. 2) Many people have been reached via this method. I know of at least 2 other people. 3) Don't do surveys on the street. Screw being nice. 4) The only info they have on me is name and handphone no. They didn't even know my age, e-mail and what not. Info was given to me via SMS..
Prudential is a dishonest company with questionable practices..

Something isn't kosher...
Today is the "interview" with Prudential. Am going there not for the job, cause most likely it's going to be an insurance job, which I don't want. I do however want to find out how they got my information. Just found out that my friend got the same call from the same lady saying an ex-classmate got Michelle referred him. And his is even better.. cause he just changed his hp no.. And they told him that it's not to sell insurance.. I wonder if that's true or if it's like those annoying ppl that ask for donations but tell u they are not there to ask you for money/buy stuff.. liars.. all of them..

Stay tuned here to find out what happens when Joel vs Prudential!!

Is this the new time sharing/ MLM kind of scam?
Got a phone call today from this lady who told me to go down to Fuji Xerox bulding for an interview this coming wednesday for a management trainess post of sorts. I'll say upfront that I'm sorry to Angel (her name) if this is a real deal. Cause I didn't apply for this job. In fact she told me that I was referred to this job by an ex-classmate called Michelle.. Maybe my memory is bad, but I dun have an ex-classmate called Michelle. Anyway I'm supposed to go down in formal clothes and bring my resume. I'm interested in the prospect of getting a job, but a large part of me is going "eh?". This is highly suspicious. I mean she sends me the info on where to meet via sms. I can't remember if she mentioned a company name, I heard fuji xerox and therefore thought it was the same company. When I asked her which floor I was to go to, she said call her when I reach there and she'll come down to pick me up. Conflicted. Should I cancel the interview? Or go for it?

Have I done a post on vegetarian food before?

Anyway was just thinking about vegetarian food, specifically mock meat. This is the thing I don't get about vegetarian food and by extension, vegetarians. You all don't want to eat meat and stuff. I don't understand it so I won't comment on it. Why do you want your food to look like meat ? Aren't you contented with your food looking like veg and all? (I know mock meats are basically flour). Is it because you want to make your food look more interesting or you actually want to eat meat but dun want to come out and eat it? If it's the former then the food could be made to look like other stuff.. I mean stars and stuff (ok, I'm not very creative).. go crazy.. be creative.. but to make it look like meat? Preventing withdrawal symptoms? Deep seated desire for meat?

I like meat and am not so fond of the veggie.. but even if I were to go all meat diet (meatatarian?), I wouldn't make mock veg. Just saying.. that's all..

Image hosting by Photobucket Sometimes words trigger a song Image hosting by Photobucket
I have a korean lecturer this sem. He's an ok guy. Nice enough. terrible. (Decided to slash off the earlier comments because of something stupid that he has decided to implement. He wants to take attendance and make it count towards the CA. I find that this is ok, but he wants to start taking now?? Near the end? When I attend he doesn't take, now when I need to skip to rush my FYP he wants to take? I missed 1 hr today and will probably miss another 2 hrs next week cause I will be rushing my FYP to get results.. Here's a hint: attendance is low because you are boring. The previous lecturer didn't have this problem) And is a boring lecturer.. He makes really forced jokes and laughs at them himself.. He has this .. quirk of sorts.. he always uses the phrase "in other words" like every 2 sentences.. it's... well.. ok.. just that.. it tends to trigger a song in my head that also uses that exact same phrase. So basically the song plays in my head then when I get it to stop, he says it again and gets it in again.. Anyway today he just developed a new quirk.. and it's "Ah hah".. exclaiming at almost everything..
I'm just glad I'm graduating soon and I'll have the song in my head to make the lecture better.

Excerpts from a (MSN) conversation part 2

Sometimes you have to struggle to come up with something funny to write. Other times.. they just write themselves. This is a conversation I had with Sarah (sister of Janis of wanting twins fame). Some parts have been summarised, but the meaning remains intact.

Me: Hey Janling
Sarah( aka Janling): was going to ask who it was, but only Joel would call me that..
Me: eh.. who said I was Joel? Anyway the name "Janling" has started to spread since Joel told us about it
Sarah: Oh.. so who are you then?
Me: Oh I'm from Joel's group. You don't know me.
*silence for like 5 minutes*
Sarah: Oh.. I just saw ur MSN pic.. (FYI, it's the one with Corrinne May's autograph to me with my name) JOEL!!!
Me: That sure took you long enough..I shall blog about it (which I am doing now)
Sarah: You have a blog?
Me: Yeah I do. It's stuffjanlingsays.blogspot.com.
Sarah: Oh... OH! You know what?? I was about to highlight it and copy then I realised...

Haha.. seriously, sometimes the material just writes itself..

Edit: stuffjanlingsays.blogspot.com is actually a real blog now...

Excerpts from a conversation
Wanted to post this on Sunday but I forgot. Anyway was having lunch with a bunch of church peeps including rare guest Janis (who being married has changed church)
Anyway was bringing up the topic of her desire to have twins. Background info: she wants twins. Preferably 1 boy and 1 girl.
So the conversation went something like this:
Me: Hey so you still want twins right?
Janis: Yes!!
Me: But they'll be a handful to look after leh..
Janis: Ya.
Me: Also if they are identical twins and once they start being independent, they will start to pull pranks like switch names and confuse people. Especially you, since you're not that alert...
Janis: Idiot! That won't happen k. They won't be much better than me.
Me: Well done.. you just effectively put a curse on your future children..

I'm back.. (for a bit anyway..)
Been down with some stomach ailment for the past 2 days. As a result of irregular meals due to FYP.. anyway feeling better now. Being sick sucks. Especially when it's the kind of sickness that affects appetite.. ugh..
Anyway some observation.. I think we've gone crazy with the word "i". Look around. There's the iPod, iCommerce, iMac and even the iGallop. I think the advertisers have just gone crazy and run out of originality.. the letter "i" has become what the word "extreme" was in the late 90s. Some sort of a catch phrase. There was extreme sports, extreme (the group), extreme ghostbusters, GI Joe extreme etc etc.. Even here in Singapore we have our own catchphrase/word.. For the chinese shows anyway. The word is "super".. it's crazy how the word is used for almost every chinese talent show.. project superstar, superstar idol etc etc.. there's also super the brand of coffee and cupnoodles.. what an utter lack of originality..

The 3rd and 4th gender...

Saw this funny advert just now during dinner. On the left was a pregnant woman. Just couldn't help laughing. It actually explains a lot. Like how Amanda isn't a girl..

The paradox of the easy A grade
Another observation I made while I was .. distracting myself from doing important stuff like school work.
Anyway was talking to Paul online about the easy A. If a module is easy, then it's hard to get A because of the grade curve. So basically you have a bunch of people doing so good that only a few will get the A grade. If a module is hard, it's harder to get the A but u will have a higher chance of getting the A as compared to the easy module. So if you still insist of doing an easy module, you have to actually work quite hard to get the A (probably equiv of working hard for the hard paper) and even then it's not a confirm A.
Ergo: It is better to take a hard paper and work hard.
P.S: I should be doing more revision to make the best of the 2 modules I'm doing this semester.

Critiques of the SAF
Wanted to post this last week, but it slipped my mind. Just some thoughts (mostly negative) against the Armed Forces of Singapore. This means the land, sea and air. Cause all of them are guilty of this.

Last Thursday, was at a career fair with the guys in school. Couple of interesting booths and all, but the one that really stood out was the SAF booth. Yes, they were recruiting in NUS. Guys should be able to see how dumb this is quite easily, but I'll spell it out here. The SAF was there to recruit uniformed personnel. Assuming that only Singapore citizens can sign on, that would eliminate the vast populace of foreign students in NUS. Ok, now this leaves the males and the females of our "proud" institution. Which self respecting male would sign on with the SAF now!?!?!?!? He could have signed on before he enlisted or on the day he stepped on that wretched island. Why wait till now? Why go thru all the horrible treatment as an NSF (Fulltime national serviceman) when he could have been a regular then and gotten better treatment? Also if he did it then, not only would all his education expenses have been paid for, but they would also have given him a monthly allowance. He would also get promoted faster. Ok, so then they must obviously be recruiting the female students. But once again, they could have done it then. After A-levels. Applied for the scholarships. Even if they couldn't get it, well they could have just signed on. So all that being said, why did SAF conduct a recruitment course in NUS? Shining example of the keen military minds behind our nation's defense.

Ok, next rant against them. This is more of an observation. Vincent and I were talking about this on the way home. SAF as an organisation sucks. We try to potray the image of being a lean, mean fighting machine that can fight off a lot of threats, but any male who has gone thru the system would have realised that it is far from that. There's so much back-biting, unfairness and stuff going on. The unjust get far cause they have the rank and clout whereas the everyday guys get stomped on. In a war, most of the men would shoot their officers/instructors. The statement "Thinking soldier" is a myth. The minute you think in the army or say that you thought.. trust me.. you'll get into so much crap you'd think you just had a laxative.

Therefore in conclusion to my rant against ths SAF. SAF is no1 in : Wayanging (translation doing lots of fancy things to make them look good), National Day Parades (Our military is king of parades) No other country does parades better. With all the fancy (yet pointless) manouvers. Our army is like the Harlem Globetrotters (they are like showmen basketball players) of armed forces. Can put up show, but can't compete with the real players.

Just passing thru..

Been a while since I've added a new entry. My last week was bad. I mean basically everything that could possibly go wrong did. And it culminated in Friday being a very wrong day. But I guess makes it easier for things to look up, which they have.. sort of.. I think.. yeah.. well final lap of FYP, have a test this week which I haven't studied for yet and all.. I'll try to post something interesting soon...
In the mean time enjoy the following 2 pics.
