The Day after Christmas (to the tune of Unwell)

All day staring at the ceiling
cause I'm bored of staring at the wall
I know I should get some posters for the wall
so I won't have to be so bored anymore of my life

But wait
Soon it will be chinese new year
And I'll have some more cash

But I'm not stingy I'm just a little strapped for cash

not completed yet..haha..

So ?
Ah finally finished that story. It's been stewing in my mind since July this year but lots of stuff was unsettled as to how I would want the story to carry out. I think of all the ideas I had this version is the better one. Basically this story was inspired by several areas.
1) Neil Gaiman. He did a story about parallel lives in his book of short stories called Smoke and Mirrors.
2) Adelene for her drug dealer persona. Originally the character Jane Doe was supposed to be a drug dealer called Adeline.. but then Adelene said use Jane as the name. So I thought.. ok.. haha.. For those that don't know, Jane Doe is a name given to unindentifiable bodies or people. Male variant is John Doe.
3) This conversation I had once about forgetting and forgetfulness..
4) If pain and failure are necessarily a bad thing?

One of the major changes as mentioned earlier was the persona of Jane Doe.. originally meant to be a drug dealer but as seen in this story.. something much more than that.. and this story is also linked to my first one. For those who read the first one, there are several clues thrown in for your benefit. I like stories which link.. haha..
Comments please ppl

Epilogue
Cody puts a paper weight on the letter and gets up. He heads to his cupboard to take out his photo album. He sees pictures of him and Tess together in happier days. Tears start to flow from his eyes, then he utters the fateful words.
The letter beneath the paper weight fades out of existence, as the image and memory of Tess fade from Cody and everyone who ever knew her.

Chapter 3

I’ve been thinking about it for 2 days now. Which is why I’m writing this. I need to sort out my thoughts. I keep thinking back to how I’ll forget everything about Tess.. Everything that made me fall in love with her in the first place. But the pain is crippling. I don’t know if I can move on from this. Maybe all the times of “wishing” all the pain away has made me weaker. Because of “wishing” the pain away, maybe I’ve lost the ability to deal with failure and pain. How did each of my past selves come to a decision? Did they consider all this? That with each “wish” we could be condemning ourselves further? But Tess would want me to move on. She wouldn’t want me to be stuck in this moment of time. She would want me to get on with life. So many conflicting thoughts. Don’t really know what to do.

Chapter 2
Hmm… I think I need to drink some water to collect my thoughts before I carry on writing this tale. It seems so crazy. Maybe I just hallucinated the whole thing. I hear that grief does affect people like that. But I feel oddly compelled to finish writing it down. It’s like writing down what you’ve dreamt of right after you wake up. You know that it’s a dream, yet if you don’t write it down, the dreams start to slip away as the day goes by. So here goes:
“Who are you?” I asked hesitantly. There was something peculiar about her. You know how it is when you meet someone for the first time, you try to store the person’s image and name in your mind so you won’t end up with an awkward “ Do I know you ?” the next time you meet the person. However for her, it was as if my mind had difficulty storing her image and later her name. It was like trying to grasp smoke.
“Must we go thru this again?” She replied in a manner that implied that she must have gone thru this routine with me at least 10 times before this occasion.
I gave her this blank puzzled stare which prompted her to say “Sigh, I forget how effective I am sometimes. Ok I am..”
Ok here’s the really odd part. When she said her name, I know I heard it, and I know she said it, cause I remember her lips actually moving. But I just couldn’t get it.
“Huh?”
“Hmm sorry my fault there.. ok to make things easier, just think of me as Jane Doe. You wouldn’t be able to grasp my real name anyway.”
“Ok. So what do you want from me?”
“Oh you’re mistaken there Cody, its not what I want from you, but what you want from me. That’s always the case. Since the first time I met you when you were a little boy.”
“Sorry lady, you may know my name, but I’m sure I’ve never seen you before.”
“Haha” she laughed mockingly. “But that just shows how effective I am at what I do.”
“And what is it that you do?”
“ I remove the painful memories from people. To allow them to move on with their lives. You’d be surprised to know how crippling painful memories are to some people. In short, I help them to forget.”
“And you’ve helped me before?”
“Yes on several occasions. As I said earlier, the first one being when you were a small boy. Your dog just died, was knocked down by a drunk driver while you were taking him out for a walk…”
“Nonsense, that never happened. Goldie lived till she was 60 in dog years and passed away in her sleep.”
“You seem to have difficulty understanding me Cody, you obviously DON’T remember it cause I removed it from your mind. And replaced the memory with that of Goldie, you friendly golden retriever. A pretty nice job on my part. And your real dog was actually a German Shepard called Stridor after one of your toys which you had growing up. But as they say, the proof is in the pudding so I’ll let you catch a glimpse of that old memory.” And with that she touched my forehead with her forefinger and my head was suddenly filled with images of a dog, my dog being knocked down by a car.
“So you finally believe me now? Or do you want more proof? Do you want to see the memory of your youngest brother dying from leukemia? Your first failure in school? Your first rejection by a girl?”
“No.. its ok” I answered weakly. I was still reeling from the memory of my dog, my real dog dying.
“Ok so let’s get down to business. I can help you get rid of the painful memories of Tess. So you can get on with your life. Especially now that your career is taking off.”
“Wait did you have something to do with that?”
“With what?”
“With my recent promotion, did I get like sacked or something and I called upon you and you came and voila --- instant promotion?”
“Firstly I resent that, its not so much a voila.. its actually a very calculated process. And secondly nope. That was all your effort. Kudos.”
“Ok, and I’m sure I asked you this before, but because I obviously don’t remember the answer, what’s in it for you? Nothing comes for free in this world.”
“You’re learning fast. As to what’s in it for me? I get all the memories related to that 1 incident which you so want to forget. Painful, happy, bitter, sweet, sad.. everything. Take for example your dear brother Darren. When I took away the memory of his death, I also took away the memory of both of you growing up, playing games together etc…Also everyone who ever knew him would also forget that he ever existed. It’s part of the deal. So for the memory of Tess’ death, I will take away everything you ever knew about her, every happy memory you have of her, even her parents will not remember her or depending on me, I can replace their memory of her with something happier.”
“Who are you? And I don’t mean your name. To be able to do what you are saying, you must be like a god or something.”
“Think of me of a collector and no, I’m not a god.. more of a something as you put it. Some people collect stamps I collect memories. It helps me pass time.”
“Anyway I think you need to think about it. I mean you’ll lose every memory of her. Can you live with that? You will forget the first time you met her, about how your heart skipped a beat, about the first date you went out on with her. Everything…I’m going off now. I’ve got other clients. You know how to reach me.” And with that she faded out again.

Finally the 2nd story in the 7 part anthology

Chapter 1

I'm writing all this down so I can sort out my thoughts and also to see if what she's saying is true. If what she says is true, then this writing and everything related to it will fade away from existance..
I'll start from where I feel it will be the most relevant..
It started 5 days ago at work. I was talking to Eugene.
“You know Cody, I don’t think I can remember a time where anything bad has happened to you. It’s as if you have this lucky star constantly shining for you.”
“Haha… you’re just jealous that I got the promotion instead of you. Bad things happen to me all the time. Like for instance …” as I rattled off something, my mind started to wander… He was right. For as long as I could remember, I don’t think anything really bad has happened to me before…
I grew up in an average household. We weren’t like super wealthy or anything, more of an average middle class family. But things were good. We had a small garden where my mum used to set up an inflatable pool on hot Saturday afternoons. And I had a dog too... a golden retriever. We called her Goldie and….
“Hey Mr-King-Of-The-World, you ok? You seemed to kinda zone out there”
“Huh? Yeah I’m ok Eugene.. just distracted for a while. Anyway you’re wrong.. Not everything always works out for me k? I probably just forget them and focus on the good times. Anyway I guess I was in the right place at the right time that’s why I got this promotion. The last guy who held this position just upped and left. You knew him right? What’s his name again?”
“Edward. And well I knew him indirectly thru Jess. She works in my department after all. Anyway well you’re probably right. I doubt you’re always this fortunate.”
“Well I don’t have time to carry on this conversation, I have a family dinner tonight. My sis and her family are visiting from Australia. Bye.”
Dinner was quite uneventful, basically Sis was recently promoted but with that promotion meant that she had to go to another country to work so now the whole family had to decide what to do… pretty domestic stuff, nothing I’d want to get involved in.. Then the bombshell dropped. It was somewhere during dessert. My phone went off so I went to the living room to take the call. Caller ID showed “Theresa Home”.
“Hi Tess? What’s up? Can I call you later? I’m in the middle of dinner.”
A subdued voice replied “ Cody, its me Albert.”
“Oh hi Albert , is this urgent?”
And yet somehow when those words left my mouth, I had this ominous feeling.
“It’s Tess, she’s dead.”
I suddenly felt very light headed, my mouth went dry and my senses kinda blacked out for a while. Then they came back on again. I barely managed to force out a reply.
“How? Why?”
“It was a car accident, she must have been trying to swerve to avoid an oncoming vehicle, she drove straight into a streetlamp. Can you come over now?”
I can’t exactly remember what I said or the events that happened subsequently. The funeral was short because her parents were extremely distraught. Only family members, relatives and close friends were invited. I seemed to be stuck in a state of limbo. The first night of the funeral, I hid away in the stairwell of the funeral parlor to just cry… I couldn’t make sense of it all. It seemed so unfair. I just wanted the pain to go away. I wanted to forget the pain. It was then that I uttered those fateful words “I wish I could forget all the pain.”
Then she/it appeared at the foot of the steps. ( I still don’t know for sure what she is). She seemed to suddenly fade into existence. And she said “ I knew you’d need my help again.”

Crazy Sci Fi idea
i had this inspiration for a sci fi story during service. Basically resolves all the so called conflicts abt how the Earth is 5000 years old give or take but there are dinosaur bones which supposedly age millions of years thru carbon dating..
Basically someone in the future sent them back.. to deceive people.. it does not necessarily mean that the earth will last millions of year but it could indicate the high radiation involved in time travel.. which would kill organics so they send back dead stuff like bones... that's what I got so far..

I've survived the gauntlet
The gauntlet of events that began probably right after my exams concluded has just ended.. point of grace play over, caroling over, pracs, rehersals, chalet.. everything has finally ended.. Christmas came and gone.. I feel.. odd..
I'm still feeling quite tired due to late nights and early mornings.. think I need time to heal and recover..
At the end of it all.. what did I take back from all this? Has my faith been increased? Has God been glorified by what I've done? I dunno.. its been a long month.. I'll probably do a reflections thingy on the blog closer to the new year.. may or may not.. its been a tough year.. very unsettled.. How I long for the status quo...

Brrr.. cold day
It's one of those days where u dun want to leave the house. However circumstances will make u have to leave the house. Just watched downloaded Justice League. The next best substitute to watching tv, cause my tv is still spoilt. Have decided to repair this one first then wait till prices of the new sets drop substantially then get.. realised after much consideration that it isn't practical to get such an expensive tv now.. Logic over desire..

Latest Update!
Noel's still not fully recovered. Tai Vie's fever has broken, is coherent. Basically the worst is over. Keep praying for them and the rest of the mission trip team.
Thanks!

What are dreams?
This is a question that has been lurking around at the back of my head for a while. Is it random images formed by our brain as we sleep at night? Or do they hold some other meaning. In the Bible, Joseph had dreams that meant things, and Daniel could interpret dreams.. but those dreams were awfully symbolic.. on their own no one could really predict their real reason.. my dreams seem very literal..
I just had one very long night.. Slept from 11:30pm to now.. estimate 9:45am... and unless I forgot chunks of it which is unlikely, I had 1 very long dream.. it started pointless, but then it went into key areas of my past then after that it went into unknown areas.. do dreams reveal what we think and how we feel ? Or can we deceive ourselves even in dreams?

Sucks to be sick..
I seem to be nursing the aftershocks of some indigestion/stomach problem.. after eating a bit I feel quite quesy or bloated.. taking antacids.. guess I shouldn't have had dinner and stayed out for supper with the rest of the guys.. haha..

Movies 101
Never watch a movie without knowing what is going to be about. Happened to me today when I unexpectedly watched a movie. Disney's "Brother Bear".. My first G rated film in years.. haha.. anyway the show was quite good except I had to figure out what direction the show was heading for.. cause according to the film poster its abt 2 bears.. but show started with humans.. and 1 bear.. which was eventually killed.. so had to fill in the blanks.. haha.. not a bad show.. just that got some stereotypical potrayal.. Canadians were moose.. and very dumb.. haha they had the trademark accent with the "eh" at the back.. haha..

Urgent Prayer Request!!
Hi all who read this. Please pray for my friends Tai Vie and Noel. They have suddenly taken ill with severe headaches and vomitting. If my info is correct, Noel is feeling better but continue to pray for him. But Tai Vie is still in an incoherent state, being heavily sedated and is tied to his bed to prevent him from removing his drip. Doctors have taken a lumbar puncture to find out what is wrong. Symptoms appear to be seizures of sorts.

Depressing Day part 2
The day did answer the qns though of why so many professional muscians take 1) drugs 2)alchohol 3) smoke..
first the hours are long and u can spend up to hrs at a time doing a small part of the song cause you need to get it right and stuff.. its just.. a chore. it takes the fun out of music..

Depressing Day
Man, was today depressing.. actually the day started out good.. then came the rehersals which was super depressing.. I mean the storyline is depressing and the songs are depressing.. it just affects my mood.. feeling a tad in a blue funk now.. just had a great dinner with the guys though.. ate at Nid's Thai.. which was actually supposed to be a small group which somehow or other exploded into a group of 14 or more.. then went to Gelare's to eat dessert.. round 2.. haha.. not bad lah.. can do it again. But not so soon.. but still feeling depressed.. food does help.. but not much.

Monday, December 08, 2003

It's been a busy day. Woke up at 10-ish then ate followed by the cleaning of my fish tank filters.. or rather filter because I didn't have time to clean the smaller one.. opened it a bit though.. ew.. super rancid smell.. its like raw sewage or worse.. then filled up the tank.. going to let it cycle then after that decide which fish to transfer upstairs.
After that tidied up my room a bit, oh yeah my room tv died.. after 10 years of being with me.. sigh.. that is why I can't watch any tv shows for at least till this weekend..
Had caroling prac at Aunty Ailing's house in the afternoon.. not bad.. but think its quite hard to expect to train new ppl every year.. and dunno if its just a coincidence, but why are kids getting more and more tone deaf? must be the stuff they are listening to man..
Played a bit of my online game also.. but really in the mood.. my dragon died a few times tonight.. sigh.. maybe tomorrow will be better.
